Show biz runs hot

IT rained, it poured, but the show did go on.

Showgoers from around the state flocked to the Royal Geelong Show at the weekend, despite drizzle, black clouds and harsh winds.

The fairy floss wheel and the dodgem cars were safely packed away after what show president David Heath summed up as a “fantastic event” came to an end yesterday.

“People didn’t let the weather worry them they put their coat on and came for a walk,” Mr Heath said.

“I think people were determined to get out and about after being restricted during the cycling championships.”

But with the rain came positives, too.

“The Toyota Hilux utes performed really well the team had a lot of fun in the mud,” he said. “I actually got to have a ride last night as they did their last one. They’re pretty wild to ride in when they get going.”

Always a people-magnet, the fireworks on Saturday night drew the biggest crowd of the event.

“The fireworks were just outstanding,” Mr Heath said. “We put a lot of extra effort in because some people missed out on seeing some of the other things in the program.”

Among the highlights he listed the quality-made carnival rides, Victorian showmen and the livestock entries.

“We had entrants bringing horses and sheep from interstate and they brought a lot of interest to the town,” he said.

Police presence was strong, but Mr Heath said there were no major concerns throughout the weekend.

“The crowd behaviour was particularly good the vibe was very constant,” he said.

“There was a lot of fun being had, a lot of joking, and police had to deal with very little trouble.

“It was great to see people enjoying themselves and to have no concerns in that area.”
